This cemetery started off as a bit of a mistake, it was supposed to be a public cemetery and the first man buried there was a Baptist, David Dogget. By error the land was registered as belonging to the Anglican parish and the Venerable Archdeacon Benjamin Dudley was pretty quick off the mark to take advanage of this and declined to have any more non conformists buried there. He later relented but those non conformists had made other arrangements which is why Rangiora has a patchwork of small cemeteries.

Just visiting an old friend.
Estelle Pearl Dobson nee Buckley
I never knew Mrs Dobson. She was a neighbour to the Bruce family in Mersey St, Christchurch. She was married to Roy whose name was really Robert Christopher. They had one son Alexander Donald, good friend to my father in law. As a testament to a grand lady I never knew I hear she made great bread and her loaf tins are in my cupboard. As if this is not enough the Dobson Chev adorns our garage, another grand lady.
Roy owned the garage known as R.C.Dobson, 7 Hereford Place, Central Christchurch.

As of 5 October 2014 I have a photo to represent all of the following graves, some good, some not so good. The list is not a complete list of those buried but is a reasonable cross section of some of the town's interesting past. My intention to load each photo is limited by time. See Below. If you spot a relative among the names, but no photo leave a message. Those in blue are of interest to me and those in green have a miltary connection. If you spot a mistake please let me know.

William Atkinson was born in Worcop, England, I think that is how you spell it, my geography of the UK is limited, 7 March 1816. He came out to New Zealand, marrying Dorothea Henrietta Adams in 1844. He gained various land interests. He bought up the farming rights to Molesworth in 1873. One of their children, Margaret, 1849 - 1926 married Dougall George Matheson, son of Dugald and Jean Matheson, nee McGill of Scotland. Margaret and Dougall are interred in the one and only mausoleum in this cemetery. They had no children.
One of the best things about this cemetery is the list of unmarked graves on the inner wall of the gate. I wish all other cemeteries had the same.

BATCHELOR BOYS
Funny how things work out. I didn't think I would find out much about these two lads but I received a phone call out of the blue from someone seeking another Batchelor and while looking for him came across the family of Douglas and Corrie.
They were sons of Charles Alfred Batchelor born 23 May 1867 and Hannah Sophia Batchelor nee Thompson born August 1872 Denmark. I think both parents died in Timaru which explains why the boys are alone here.
Their siblings were:
Charles Henry 1893 - 1968
George William 1894 - 1942
Peter John 1897 - 1921
Alexander Norman 1896 - 1968
Frances Edward 1900 - 1968
Zoe Octavia 1902 - 1982
Alma Ivy
1905 - 1986
Harold Oscar 1907 - 1978
Vera Alice 1909 - 1958
Ivor Richard 1910 - 1996
The name Snellex was originally Polish "Snelleksz". Edward Hunt Snellex was born in 1897 in Rangiora. He served in WWI. His army records show him as Private Edward Ned Bob Snellex. His Next of Kin was shown as A.Hunnibell, a friend. In 1921 he married Gertrude Isabella Smith. They farmed at Mt Thomas then moved to Fernside.
The A. Hunnibell mentioned would be Alfred Hunnibell. Alfred was one of the sons of Luke and Sarah Hunnibell, nee Wenham, who arrived at Lyttelton from Suffolk in 1864. Luke was the first bootmaker in Rangiora, Alfred followed in his trade. Their shop is now Capone's restaurant. The Hunnibell name is above the window.
Luke Hunnibell was the son of Edward Hunnibell and Mary Hunnibell nee Denny. His siblings were Susan, John amd Mary.

THE CARTER BRUCE CONNECTION
Esther Carter has a complicated connection to the Bruce family. She was born Esther Didcock 1823 Stokes Page, England , parents William Deadcock (no that is not a misspelling) born 1781and Mary Woodley born 1789, and had the misfortune to marry Henry Thomas William Carter born 1836.
They had:
Henry William 1859 - 1940
Marianne 1861
Emily 1865 - 1942
George 1868 - 1918
John Thomas 1871 - 1941
Around 1872 Henry scarpered, with a Maori lass, Mere Makoara (can't blame him as from the photos in the National libray she was a stunner) and changed his name to Harry Clark, He lived in Christchurch as a carter, the occupation, not the surname and fathered another brood, later moving up north to Otaki.
Thomas Roach 1874 - 1939
Ernest 1876
Henare (Harry) William 1876 - 1946
Te One Heta (John) 1877
Mary Alice 1879
Harriet 1880
Edward James 1881
Hera (Sarah) 1883
James 1884
Mata Hokepera Martha Isobell (Bella) 1885 - 1929
Charles 1890
Joseph William 1892
Arthur 1893
It was one of this lot , Thomas Roach Clark who had a reputation as a good steady and honest worker unlike his Dad. Thomas married Bessie Dickie, a niece of Samuel Bruce, my husband's great grandfather. These Clarks came to fame because they had a pair of Siamese twins who died as infants, but not before they were put on show to raise funds. See Papers Past for this.
Meanwhile Esther raised her children. Her son Henry William is buried along side as is Emily Ivory nee Carter. After her aunt died Emily married her uncle, not a blood relation, Aquila Ivory, who ran a grain and estate agency in Rangiora.

SO MANY CHAPMANS
George Charles Chapman had been teaching at Little Akaloa with his wife before going to Rangiora. He was an architect and surveyor as well as teacher. He replaced Mr Mertens.
I really had to know. Few things are as intriguing as "killed by accident" on a headstone.
So for the record, according to the Telegraphic Otago Witness Issue 1823, 29 October 1886:
Poor Mary O'Neill, between 4.00 and 5.00pm, was killed "by being thrown out of a trap near Sockburn through the horse shying". She was from Doyleston. Her husband, Benjamin O'Neill was a farmer.

According to Papers Past , in the New Zealand Herald 21 September 1915 the then Sgt Horrell was wounded in the thigh during combat. His death was slightly more spectacular. In 1926 as Capt Frederick James Horrell, aged 25, was on a refresher flying course, back at Wigram Air Base, with Lieutenant Purcer Arlington Turner. Both men were killed when their Bristol Fighter crashed into the rosebed of the Methodist Orphanage, Papanui, narrowly missing the dining room where 60 orphans were sitting down to their evening meal.
ENSORS
With apologies to the Falkinders their stone is on a slight angle but I stood in a hole just as I took this and didn't stop to check the image.
Thomas Falkinder had died leaving his wife , Charlotte, with 4 children, James, Thomas, Joel and Fanny Charlotte. He divided his assets , mainly a chunk of the Ashley Swamp, equally among them. She continued to farm his land as well as her own, improving the properties with her son, Thomas. Joel had died 16 November 1918 aged 34 leaving his interests to his brother, Thomas. Fanny had married Samuel Birch, she then died. Charlotte died in 1920 leaving her personal estate to Thomas. So Thomas, James, Samuel Birch all had a row over who should have what with James Wylie, a local farmer and Richard Haworth, a traveller, from Christchurch. Read Papers Past in 1922 and see who won.
