THE ANDERSONS.
William Anderson was born in Dairy, Ayrshire in 1843. At 20 he came to New Zealand aboard "Sebastopol", arriving in Lyttelton 24 May 1863, according to Cyclopaedia of New Zealand. He settled in the Cust area in 1864. He had married Jeanie Baxter in 1862. They had six sons and four daughters, including Robert.

James BAXTER and his wife, Mary, share their grave with Annie Stewart Hayes. I have yet to find out how she is related. Addition: It would appear Annie is Mary's sister. Thanks Murray.
THE BELLANEYS
Archibald Falconer Bellaney, born about 1892, although some seem to think he was born in 1900, was the son of John Bellaney who was living in Lawrence at the time of WW1, which explains his being a Trooper with the Otago Mounted Rifles. He married Muriel Charlotte Rodgers after the war.
He appears to have had 7 sisters and 3 brothers, that I could find. Not in order of appearence:

Their son Samuel Rodger Bellaney was born in Balclutha in 1922. Samuel was living in St Albans, Christchurch working as a "grocer" aged 18 when he enlisted as for WW2. Serving as a gunner for the 5th Field Regiment of the NZ Artillary. He was wounded twice and gained the following medals:
Listed as single during his military service he must have married Joy Evelyn afterward.

Whether David Samuel Bradley is another of their brood I don't know but he married Ada Church and their son Eric David Bradley , born in 1912 married Charlotte Elsie Sheat, daughter of Frank Albert and Ellen Graham Sheat.
Ada Annie Williams married Robert Ferguson Campbell about 1902. He was the son of Peter and Christina Campbell.
Ada and Robert had Grace Braithwaite, Gordon Stewart, Stanley Ferguson, Ada Annie and Thomas Williams.

Away from the main cemetery is a fenced off area. It isn't far and the cattle are friendly. The enclosure contains James Candy. Along side him are William and Sarah Thompson.
THE EARLY MONUMENT
This wonderful piece of stone commemorates Stephen and Eliza Early (nee Wayland), plus their son, Frederick Henry Early, his Mary Ann Florence Alexandria (nee Christie), Mavis Early (infant daughter of Frank and Minnie) and Garland Early.

IaIsabella Murray Forrest nee McKenzie married James Russell Forrest around 1899. They had

John Galletly , born 1840, Perthshire, according to the Macdonald's File, came out to New Zealand aboard the "Clontarf" in 1860 with his father and siblings, Alex, James, Barbara, Margaret and Thomas. He bought land at Cust in 1864. He married Ellen Shea 6-6-1866. She was the daughter of J. Shea, Co Tipperary.
GARDNER
William Ralph Gardner born around 1876 to George Gleieg (Glegg, Clieg, so many different spellings, you decide) Gardener and his wife, Margaret (nee McKinley). He married Sophie (Sophia) Ruddenklau around 1908. She was the daughter of John (Johannes and Agnes Ruddenklau.

Frederick George Horrell married Sarah Louisa Sheat, daughter of Stephen and Charlotte Sheat, around 1893.

Howatt
HUNTER
Adam Hunter was born in Scotland. He married Jean (Jane ) Caldwell in 1869. They came over in the "Christian Causland" to Port Chalmers in 1871. He spent 7 years dairy farming on Bank's Peninsula then went to Springston. He bought land in the Cust area in 1882. They are buried with two of their daughters. The other lady buried with them, Jean Caldwell is possibly, Jean's mother.
Jennings
Samuel Robert Jennings is buried with his wife, Elizabeth Annie, nee Smith, daughter of Frederick Smith and Mary Ann, nee Robinson. Their son, George Smith Jennings is commemorated with them. He was born in West Eyreton in 1911 and died in air operations over Germany in 1942. Their other son is also buried in this cemetery.
Abraham and Charlotte Manders
The Manders came over on the "Blairgowrie" in 1875, with thier children, Andrew, Ambrose, Alfred and Emily.
Andrew was 21 when he came over and is listed on the MacDonald's file as a storeman when 23. He married twice, firstly to Ellen Eliza Dayhurst, (she died aged 23), secondly to Martha Stone.
Ambrose, a labourer, married at 26 to MayAnne Huthnance.
Emily married in 1887 to William James Spriggs.

MODERATE
The Moderate Brothers, William, David, Alexander, James and Robert were all born near Belfast, Ireland. They came over on the "Chrysolite" in 1862 with their parents. They had a sister, Sarah.
William married late in life to Elizabeth Farr whose parents owned the Bennetts Store. David and Alexander never married. James married Hoora. Robert married Ann. The Moderates owned the first car in Cust, they always carried a rope in case it broke down and they needed to borrow a horse for a tow. |
S Andrew Peebles, born Scotland in 1841, came out here to New Zealand in 1862 on the "Queen of Mersey". His parents were Peter and Rebecca Peebles. His siblings were Annie, Peter, James and Margaret.
Andrew married Jessie Robertson, who was also born in Scotland. She came out on the "Blue Jacket" in 1866. They married around the same time. They appear only to have had one child, Annie, who married Samuel Smith around 1898. Samuel was born in West Eyreton in 1870, son of William Smith. Their son, Andrew Peebles Alexander Smith married Gladys Cowens and their daughte, Averill Lillias Annie Peebles Smith died aged 8 weeks, and is buried here with her great grandparents, and grandmother. |

John (Johannes) Ruddenklau was born in Germany in 1834. He came to New Zealand in 1856 aboard "Joseph Fletcher". He married Agnes Watt in 1859 or 1861. Agnes was born in Scotland, daughter of Alexander and Sophie Watt. There are 2 stones on their grave, old and new.

Her siblings were Ursula Mary, Walter James, Elizabeth, James Sellman, Augusta Agnes, Arthur Alfred, Minnie Russell, Albert Edward and Harry Russell Jackson.
