Mandeville cemetery
Bradley Rd, Ohoko
Very small and easily missed. Only 4 headstones, 3 for the Barkers and 1 for Thomas Hide.
Finding information on these Barkers and Mr Hide has been difficult.
Mary Jane Barker, who is interred at Ormondville cemetery, Manawatu-Wanganui, her headstone there reads "In loving memory of Mary Jane, Relict of the Late James Barker of Ohoka, Canterbury, New Zealand, died 5th Sept, 1906." These Barkers may have come over on the "Clontarf" in 1858. The dates and the names fit but this is only a thoery so far. A James and Mary Jane Barker did have a son, John, here in 1861 but again this is only a possibility.
As a matter of interest Thomas Hide of Swannanoa is listed as having 90 sheep in 1880, 140 sheep in 1881 and 150 sheep in 1882. He appears to have been a batchelor and was a major mover and shaker in getting the local school built. He had at least 2 brothers, William and Frederick.
